Priscilla Day was born into post-WWII England and spent part of her youth in Canada before entering Oxford University to study psychology. Like many precocious children, Day taught herself to read at an early age and soon after, while recovering from an illness, taught herself to draw, first by repeatedly trying to capture the likeness of her teddy bear and then by re-illustrating all of her favorite childrens' stories. This affinity for the illustrator's art has formed the very nature of her work: "I first decided I wanted to be a book illustrator at the age of nine, but was discouraged because it wasn't a 'proper' job. Though I can always 'see' instantly what I want to draw before I draw it, I can really only draw with words to guide me. Every piece I do is in essence an illustration to a story, even if it's only a sentence that I've made up and never will never tell to anyone. I happy for viewers to create their own stories around my drawings."
