William Daniell, R.A. 1769-1837English landscape and and painter and printmaker, notable for his work in aquatint, Daniell was born in the outskirts of London, He received training of a practical nature, as assistant to his uncle Thomas Daniell in India from 1785 to 1794.During their voyaging, William kept journals, became a proficient draughtsman and perfected the art of aquatinting. From 1802 to 1813 much of his time was taken up with a series of views of London and another of the London Docks. He was elected A.R.A. and R.A in 1807 and 1822. He refused the post of draughtsman to an Australian expedition and instead made numerous tours in England and Scotland. His Voyage Round Great Britain occupied him from 1813 to 1823. He completed his tour of the Scottish coasts in 1815 and produced no more field work until 1821, it is thought he may have visited Europe in the interim. He resumed his British tours in 1821 and went to Ireland in 1828 and France in 1833.The present drawing was made probably made during his return voyage to London in 1794. Published: with T.
